Mérindol
Merindol itself is a unspoiled provençal village on the southern foothifls of the Luberon mountains, surrounded by olive trees, cypresses and vines. below the "garrigue" the wood of evergreen oaks , overlook the Durance valley with a view over its 40 kilometers winding picturesque river. On the banks of the Durance the Regional Park Authorities have recently installed an ornithological observatory. On one side are the Alpilles hills, and on the other the Montagne Ste Victoire, so often painted by Cezanne. It is a protected site within the Regional Natural Park of the Luberon. The old village is full of charm, with its narrow streets, and old houses, and above on the hillside is one of the early protestant settlements, and the remains of the 13th century castle. Nearby are a few of the remaining houses carefully restored during the last 30 years. From here clearly marked paths lead up into the Luberon hills, up into the cedar forests ad over to the ancient villages of Lacoste and Oppède. Life in Merindol is gentle and peaceful, enjoying a warm and sunny climate when you can sit outside and savour the cool glass of "pastis" accompanied by olives or "tapenade" which will be your introduction to a warm and fantastic region.
