MARIA DE FAYKOD OR ENCHANTING MARBLE

In between the skies and the earth, Maria de Faykod operates a direct creation with Carrara marble.
This is the artist's favourite material and a total support for her free creativity.

"  It is this material that contains the fourth dimension, a total vibration of living matter and, par excellence, a total vibration of the universal time" – de Faykod

Her technique is the result of a perpetual striving for  perfection.

On the trace of Michelangelo, Maria de Faykod fetches the whitest marble that can be found in Carrara, Italy into which she can already feel the presence of the statue she is going to erect.

This marble often weighing several tons is then transported to her studio in Aups close to the museum.

De Faykod carves her structure directly. She does not improvise and the first chisel strike determines the last.

This technique calls for extreme precision. The true creative work is the very design of the statue. The sculpture is present in the artist's mind and visualised both as a whole and in small details.

The first stage involves roughening the marble with chisels, hammer and a diamond grinder.

The work then develops progressively; different finer and finer chisels are used to refine details. The finishing touch is polishing with finer and finer sand paper and water.

Marble crystals are meshed together with a felt tip coated with special powder to give the statue a final shine.
